VM choice: Jigsaw's slice of sand window display

Jigsaw so often confines its summer VM to fans and pretty, floaty summer dresses in the windows. Attractive as this is, the chain has a different installation in its London Argyll Street store at the moment.

A tall, Perspex-sided cabinet, placed centrally in the open-back window, is filled with white sand with layers of blue-tinted sand marbled though it. At the foot of the box is a pile of sifted sand with a sprinkle and swirl of blue suggesting the water’s edge, together with a casually-placed pair of white leather, espadrille slides.

Wedged in to the top of the sand tower is a large, blue-on-blue, silk/cotton scarf. Titled the Blue Lemons scarf, it doubles as a beach sarong. Rather than being dumped like discarded merchandise, the scarf is part-embedded in the sand. This gives a nice touch as though the sand was a slice of summery Mediterranean beach, hauled back to not-quite-summer-yet-England, and displayed in the store window.

Notice how the scarf is duplicate displayed to accessorise the wall fixture on the right. To finish the display, a neutral-coloured soft-felt fedora is laid on the top of the sand in the cabinet.

Reminiscent of a giant slice of marbled cake, a slice through a beehive or an anthill, the eyelevel grains of sand force the customer to encounter its gritty substance and the evocative anticipation of a perfect summer vacation. Which, of course, requires its own wardrobe.
