VM inspiration: EM Quartier Mall in Bankok

Bangkok’s new Klong Toei district has a spectacular new district, the EM quarter. This includes a new shopping mall, the EM, operated by The Mall Group and Siam Paragon. It contains 1,000 stores, a mix of local Thai brands and international premium ones.

The first of three new buildings for the quarter, externally it is a series of layers piled on top of each other with a fifth floor garden. Densely built Bangkok has little public space and this will be very popular, not least because customers will welcome the air-conditioned atmosphere. Six floors of restaurants will also prove a big draw.

The first of a series of interconnected developments in the area, including office and residential space, an art and performance centre will ground the entire project. It will include an Imax theatre, and SE Asia’s tallest man-made waterfall, some 40m high.

A vertical mall is common in all densely built Asian cities. EM Mall features a section entitled Qurator, for local Thai designers.

With a giant screen above the entrance, this is likely also be come a venue for seasonal events including New Year countdowns, as with many other giant screens across Asia.
