Design showcase: Wyevale's new lifestyle garden centre

Garden centre Wyevale’s new store in Shrewsbury pays tribute to popular TV gardener Percy Thrower. The store is on the site of the former Percy Thrower’s Garden and Leisure and adopts a new format that represents the chain’s new direction. Design is by Dalziel & Pow.

The 10,000 sq m site emphasises inspiration and hospitality, with two thirds of shop floor space dedicated to home and lifestyle products. Cross-merchandised VM spots and room sets give seasonal ideas in a style more like a homewares store than a traditional garden centre.

Each department has a distinctive feel, with wardrobes used as signposting devices. Concessions are presented as standalone boutiques and are given their own entrances and window displays.

A service and education hub, The Greenhouse, hosts talks and demonstrations and offers a library of garden-related books for customers to browse.

Outside, a show garden presents four different garden styles and various feature attractions.

These include a metal and LED tree sculpture and the world’s largest spade.
