Public support for Oxford Street retail plans finds consultation

A public consultation on plans to transform London’s Oxford Street into the world’s best outdoor shopping experience attracted 12,000 responses from local residents, businesses and other stakeholders from around the UK.

More than two thirds of those who responded support a transformation of the area, leading to a second consultation scheduled for November 2017. Issues raised in the first survey include concerns over traffic impact on surrounding districts, bus services and accessibility issues, and air quality improvements.

Westminster City Council and Transport for London (TfL) are working to ensure that improvements to Oxford Street can coincide with the launch of new Elizabeth Line services through central London in December 2018.

“This is the next step in our efforts to transform the country’s most famous and economically important shopping district, which is also home to a vibrant residential community,” says Cllr Robert Davis MBE DL, deputy leader of Westminster City Council. “We want Oxford Street and the surrounding area to remain the envy of the world and our vision is to create a neighbourhood and outdoor shopping experience that cities across the globe can aspire to. This is an enormous project which many people care deeply about. It’s crucial that everyone knows that we are listening and that they can help shape our plans.”

The Elizabeth Line opening will allow a 40 per cent reduction in bus traffic on Oxford Street, reducing congestion and improving air quality, says TfL director of city planning Alex Williams, who adds: “The strong support from this consultation has shown that there is a desire to make Oxford Street and the wider area an even better place to live, work and visit. We will now work to further analyse the consultation responses and address the issues raised as we develop our plans for a truly transformational scheme for all.”
