AR airport kiosks for nail lacquer brand OPI

Nail lacquer brand OPI has introduced a range of branded kiosks to more than 400 global travel retail locations, introducing augmented reality (AR) technology to let customers try out new lacquer shade virtually before buying.

The freestanding digital kiosks have been developed by design agency Play. They aim to increase engagement with customers, aid decision making and create higher consumer satisfaction levels. OPI plans to install examples of the kiosk in nearly every major airport in the world by next year, with a social sharing function also in development.

“Until now, there have been barriers for shoppers who want to physically try nail lacquer shades prior to purchase – in contrast to lipstick, foundation and eyeshadow shades which are readily available for in-store trial – so when OPI tasked Play with re-inventing its travel retail units to engage and excite customers we rose to the challenge, drawing on our expertise with high-tech industry leading retail installations,” says Play creative director Mark Howell.
