Design showcase: Mackage flagship in Montreal

Canadian outerwear fashion Mackage brand sought to refine its brand presence with this flagship store in its home town of Montreal.

The store has been designed by Toronto-based interiors group Burdiflek, with the objective of bringing the brand’s urban ski chalet concept to a historic building on the busy Saint Catherine Street – which is undergoing a wider rejuvenation with the introduction of new retailers.

The traditional façade of the building hides a contemporary interior, which has retained original details and reinstated lost elements. European nero marquina marble herringbone floors are set against original stonework; exposed structural beams and wire-brushed oak are matched with marble tables, oversized mirrors, and brushed bronze.

Arranged over ground and basement levels, the store provides 225 sq m (2,422 sq ft) of ground floor retail space, and a similar-sized back of house space at basement level. A sense of intimacy has been created in the large space by a process of compartmentalisation, with the store conceived as a gallery for the brand collection.

The large windows display a series of boxed vignettes, set at differing heights to create visual emphasis and emphasise the scale of the store.
