Dover Street Market opens Los Angeles branch

Dover Street Market has opened its Los Angeles branch, its sixth location worldwide, bringing its theme of ‘Beautiful Chaos’ to Imperial Street in LA’s Arts District.

The 1,394 sq m (15,000 sq ft) is located on one level in two adjoining concrete buildings, each with its own entrance. Two massive translateral huts, made of white corrugated metal sheets – pierce the dividing wall between the two buildings.

The huts house fitting rooms, service areas and brand spaces. The interior is wrapped in handmade white ceramic tiles, bringing the lightness and openness of Los Angeles into a space with few windows. No windows face the street, but two events spaces have been positioned to draw attention: artists and designers will be invited to create regular in-store installations.

Design and creative direction is by Dover Street Market and Comme des Garcons (CDG) founder Rei Kawakubo. “I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos; the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,” says Kawakubo.

Several CDG brand spaces are presented in new ways, described as a precursor of retail spaces to come. The interior features arching and circular features that are in contrast to the angular shapes of the building exterior.

The store features works by six artists: Warren Muller, Lyn Dillin, Bjorn Dahlem, Yuichi Higashionna, Gary Card, and Stuart Haygarth. Dover Street Market global sound director Caix Vive has created the aural experience of the store, while the brand’s LA correspondent Rose Kennedy Schlossberg has been commissioned to create video dispatches for the store.

A 40 seat Rose Bakery offers indoor and outdoor space, serving seasonal dishes.

Dover Street Market’s existing stores are in London, Beijing, Ginza, New York, and Singapore.
