Fashion flagship upsizing trend continues with Lakeside expansions

Fashion retailer Zara has kicked off another round of store upsizing projects, opening one of its largest units at Intu Lakeside. The 3,252 sq m (35,000 sq ft) store, set over two levels, is one of the biggest Zara stores in the UK.

The shopping centre is soon to see the opening of an extended 1,951 sq m (21,000 sq ft) River Island store.

Kingsize flagship stores are not a new phenomenon. Both H&M and Next opened extended stores at Intu Lakside in 2017 taking 3,345 sq m (36,000 sq ft) and 6,503 sq m (70,000 sq ft respectively).

A new £72m retail and leisure extension is scheduled to open at Intu Lakeside this year.

“More and more global brands are selecting intu Lakeside as the right destination from which to flourish across the UK by opening a new store here or by expanding their current footprint. Zara is a great example of this. Its on-trend designs continue to strike a chord across the UK and globally and we’re really excited to see a larger store that offers customers its full clothing range,” says Intu regional managing director Rebecca Ryman.
