Italian restaurant and bar opens in former Brixton department store

A new Italian restaurant, bar and cocktail club has opened in part of a former department store in London’s Brixton. The building was originally part of the Bon Marche store.

Cattivo has been launched by the founders of the nearby Canova Hall, and Martello Hall in Hackney. It offers a casual Italian-inspired restaurant on the ground floor, with a basement bar that hosts nightly entertainment. There are also daytime events, such as a showtime brunch, at weekends.

Design group Red Deer is behind the interiors. The ground floor restaurant, which benefits from floor-to-ceiling windows, features a stripped-back shell with Art Nouveau elements and touches of pub vernacular. Rustic textures and fabrics encourage customers to relax, while a zinc-topped bar offers views of the open kitchen.

The basement bar features low level lighting, with full height curtains used to divide the space into private booths. Private areas feature mini bars that can be stocked as per guests’ requests.
