New flagship for travel book and map retailer Stanfords

Travel bookstore Stanfords has opened its new and relocated London flagship store, on Mercer Walk. The store replaces an existing store on Long Acre.

The 387 sq m (4,165 sq ft) store has been designed by Caulder Moore, with shopfitting by Bluecrow Projects. It was opened with an event which welcomed guests including travel authors Benedict Allen and Phoebe Smith.

The design brief called for a space that could provide a home for the numerous book launch and signing events that are hosted by Stanfords, along with an expanded café offering 25 covers, including an outdoor seating area. The store claims to offer the world’s largest stock of maps and travel guides under one roof.

Installations inspired by travel, photography and explorers are used in store that introduces a more modern and urban aesthetic for the brand.

“We are excited to kick start 2019 with the opening of our new store. Our move has allowed us to expand our offering as well as give our store a much-needed refresh. We are very privileged to have such a loyal customer base, and many tell us they make a pilgrimage to Stanfords when visiting the capital; I am sure they will be delighted to see our new home,” says Stanfords chairman and CEO Vivien Godfrey.

Mercer Walk has introduced a number of new stores recently, under the management of The Mercers’ Company. Property director Simon Taylor says: “This iconic brand holds an impressive heritage and with the largest collection of books, maps and travel products it remains a huge asset to the area. The brand’s commitment to their customers both historically and presently is inspiring and we are thrilled to welcome their new flagship store to the Mercers’ Estate.”
